  • UW Children’s Center at Portage Bay is a Montessori preschool and daycare for infants through 5-year-olds. The center serves over 100 families with 9 classrooms and a playground.

Montessori philosophy views the educational environment as critical for child development; it provides inspiration for exploration and an invitation to learn. However, when surveyed, families and teachers felt that some parts of the school looked “dreary,” “cluttered,” or “too much like an office for grownups,” in particular hallways and cubby areas. My goal was to create a wall mural that would build connection to place and foster a more inspiring Montessori educational environment.

  • I worked with childcare center administrators to gather input from families and school staff about their perceptions of the preschool and hopes for children’s learning. I used this feedback to design a wall mural that would inspire curiosity about local Pacific Northwest habitats for preschoolers. The mural is designed to be viewed at preschoolers’ eye level as well as from an adult point of view. The scene is inspired by the nearby Hoh Rainforest. Snuggly animals and warm light enhance the sense of caring and coziness that families value most about the child care center.
